Cervical overload refers to the excessive mechanical stress placed on the muscles, ligaments, and joints of the cervical spine, exceeding the normal tolerance capacity of these structures. It is most commonly caused by prolonged poor posture, such as maintaining a forward head position while using smartphones or computers, repetitive neck movements during occupational or athletic activities, as well as psychological stress that contributes to increased muscle tension in the cervical region.
Persistent or repeated overload may lead to muscle spasm, local inflammation, and neck pain, while in chronic cases it may contribute to accelerated degenerative changes of the intervertebral discs and cervical joints. The most common symptoms include neck pain, stiffness, tension-type headaches, and, in some cases, pain radiating toward the shoulders.
Treatment focuses primarily on correcting posture, improving workplace ergonomics, performing targeted stretching and strengthening exercises for the cervical muscles, and applying relaxation techniques. The main goals are to reduce symptoms, prevent recurrence, restore normal cervical function, and minimize the risk of progression to a more persistent or chronic condition.
