Cervical flexion loading refers to the mechanical stress placed on the structures of the cervical spine when the head is maintained for prolonged periods in a forward-bent position, as commonly occurs while looking down at a mobile phone or computer screen.
In this position, the center of gravity of the head shifts forward relative to the supporting axis of the cervical spine, resulting in a significant increase in the load that must be counteracted by the posterior cervical muscles and ligaments, even with relatively small degrees of head flexion.
As the angle of flexion increases, the stress on the intervertebral discs, facet joints, and paraspinal muscles also increases. This phenomenon is sometimes described in modern literature as “text neck syndrome”, referring to the postural strain associated with prolonged use of electronic devices.
Repeated or prolonged exposure to this mechanical overload may lead to muscle fatigue, neck pain, tension-type headaches, and, over time, may contribute to the acceleration of degenerative changes in the cervical spine.
Management focuses on improving posture during the use of electronic devices, adjusting screen position to eye level, taking regular breaks for neck movement, and performing targeted strengthening exercises for the deep cervical flexor and extensor muscles to prevent chronic mechanical overload.
