Xenoarthroplasty

Xenoarthroplasty is the surgical reconstruction of a joint using xenogeneic (animal-derived) material or an implant. It is rarely performed today due to advances in synthetic prosthetic technologies. The goal is to replace damaged articular surfaces. A high degree of biocompatibility is required for the implanted material. It is used primarily in experimental or highly specialized settings.
