Respiratory muscle insufficiency is a condition in which the respiratory muscles (mainly the diaphragm, the intercostal muscles, and the accessory muscles of breathing) cannot function adequately, resulting in difficulty in proper breathing and ventilation of the lungs.
It is associated with severe kyphosis and thoracic deformities.
