The term radial joint generally refers to joints involving the radius, one of the two bones of the forearm. These include the radiocarpal joint at the wrist, which connects the radius with the carpal bones, as well as the proximal and distal radioulnar joints, which connect the radius with the ulna at the elbow and wrist, respectively. These joints allow the rotational movements of the forearm, known as supination and pronation.
The radiocarpal joint, in particular, is responsible for wrist flexion, extension, abduction, and adduction movements. Its integrity is essential for fine motor control, grip function, and overall hand performance.
Injuries affecting these joints, such as fractures of the distal radius (Colles’ fracture) or damage to the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC), may result in wrist pain, restricted range of motion, and instability of the wrist region. Proper diagnosis and treatment are important to restore normal wrist mechanics and hand function.
