Occipital bone

The occipital bone is one of the main bones of the skull and forms its posterior and inferior part. It helps protect the brain, particularly the cerebellum and brainstem. It includes the foramen magnum, through which the spinal cord passes. It plays an important role in supporting and connecting the skull to the cervical spine.
