Nucleus pulposus

The nucleus pulposus is the central, gelatinous part of the intervertebral disc, located within the annulus fibrosus. It acts as a shock absorber for the spine, allowing distribution of forces during movement and protecting the vertebrae from mechanical stress. Degeneration or herniation of the nucleus pulposus can cause pain or neurological symptoms.
