Nucleus pulposus

The central, semi-translucent and elastic part of the intervertebral disc, also known as the gelatinous nucleus. It consists mainly of water, proteoglycans, and collagen, giving the disc its ability to absorb shocks. It contributes to the transfer and distribution of loads along the spine. With aging or due to degeneration, it loses fluid and elasticity, leading to reduced functionality.
