Lateral collateral ligament

The lateral collateral ligament is a strong fibrous ligament located on the outer (lateral) side of a joint. It contributes to joint stability and limits excessive lateral movements. In the knee, for example, the lateral collateral ligament protects against varus forces and injuries from the inner side. Injury may result from direct trauma or sudden rotational stress. Treatment depends on the severity of the damage and may be conservative or surgical.
