Sciatic nerve
The sciatic nerve is the largest and thickest nerve in the human body and is composed of nerve roots originating from the lumbosacral region of the spine. It extends from the pelvic area, passes through the buttocks and the posterior surface of the thigh, and reaches the lower limb. It is responsible for innervating many muscles of the leg and transmitting sensory information from the lower extremity. Compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve can cause sciatica, with pain, numbness, burning sensation, or weakness along the course of the nerve. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include medication, physiotherapy, and specific rehabilitation exercises.
