Cervical strain
Cervical strain refers to the mechanical stress imposed on the structures of the cervical spine —muscles, ligaments, intervertebral discs, and joints— during daily, occupational, or athletic activities. It is usually caused by prolonged maintenance of abnormal postures, such as forward head flexion during the use of mobile devices or computers, repetitive neck movements, carrying weights on the shoulders or head, as well as psychological stress that leads to increased muscle tension in the area. Chronic or repetitive cervical strain may cause muscle fatigue and spasm, local inflammation, and may accelerate degenerative changes of the intervertebral discs and joints over time, particularly when combined with poor posture. The most common symptoms include neck pain, stiffness, a feeling of heaviness in the area, and, in some cases, tension-type headaches or pain radiating toward the shoulders. Management focuses on reducing mechanical stress through ergonomic interventions in the workplace, correction of posture, regular movement breaks, as well as targeted strengthening and stretching exercises of the cervical muscles, with the aim of preventing chronic strain and degenerative complications.
