Lateral collateral ligament (LCL)

The lateral collateral ligament (LCL) is a strong fibrous structure located on the outer side of the knee. It contributes to stabilizing the joint and resists varus forces. It connects the femur to the head of the fibula. Injuries to this ligament are less common than those of the medial collateral ligament but may occur in combination with other injuries. Treatment depends on severity and ranges from conservative management to surgical reconstruction.
