Arthoplasty
Arthroplasty is a surgical procedure performed to restore the function of a damaged or severely degenerated joint by replacing the worn joint surfaces with artificial components (prostheses). These implants are typically made of durable materials such as metal alloys, ceramics, and high-performance polyethylene or other advanced polymers. Arthroplasty is most commonly indicated for advanced osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteonecrosis, or complex fractures that irreparably damage the joint surface. The primary goals of the procedure are to relieve chronic pain, restore joint mobility, improve function, and enhance the patient's overall quality of life. Depending on the extent of joint damage, arthroplasty may be total, in which all joint surfaces are replaced, or partial, where only the damaged portion of the joint is reconstructed while healthy structures are preserved. The most frequently performed procedures are total hip replacement and total knee replacement, although arthroplasty is also commonly performed on the shoulder, elbow, ankle, and other joints. Postoperative recovery includes a structured rehabilitation program focused on restoring range of motion, strengthening the surrounding muscles, and gradually returning the patient to normal daily activities. The long-term success of arthroplasty depends on several factors, including accurate implant positioning, the quality of the surrounding bone and soft tissues, the patient's age, activity level, adherence to rehabilitation, and appropriate long-term follow-up.
