Ankylosis

Ankylosis is the partial or complete loss of normal joint mobility due to permanent changes affecting the joint surfaces or the surrounding tissues. It may develop as a result of severe injuries, chronic inflammatory diseases, degenerative conditions, infections, or prolonged joint immobilization. Patients typically experience marked stiffness, restricted range of motion, and difficulty performing everyday activities, while pain may also be present in some cases. Early diagnosis is important, as it can help prevent further deterioration and preserve joint function. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and the severity of the condition and may include physical therapy, medication, arthroscopic procedures, or reconstructive surgery to improve mobility and quality of life.
