Anatomy

Anatomy is the branch of medical science that studies the structure, morphology, and relationships between the various organs and systems of the human body. In orthopedics, a thorough understanding of the anatomy of the musculoskeletal system—including bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves—is fundamental to understanding normal function as well as accurately diagnosing and treating orthopedic conditions and injuries. Anatomical knowledge is broadly divided into descriptive anatomy, which focuses on the structure of individual organs and tissues, and functional anatomy, which examines how these structures interact to produce movement, stability, and support. Of particular importance in orthopedic practice is topographic (regional) anatomy, which defines the precise location of bones, joints, muscles, vessels, nerves, and other soft tissues in relation to one another. This knowledge is essential for accurate diagnostic imaging, preoperative planning, and the safe performance of surgical procedures. A comprehensive understanding of anatomy enables the orthopedic surgeon to approach anatomical structures with precision, minimizing the risk of injury to nerves, blood vessels, and surrounding tissues while optimizing surgical outcomes.
